Water Water everywhere, But Not a drop to drink…
Yes the day when this situation will arise is not so far away if we will be using water indiscriminately like this.
Let’s not think of future right now and come to the present situations.
In present world there are many areas in the world where people do not have access to water even for drinking. In Sudan 12.3 million, Venezuela 5.0 million, Ethiopia 2.7 million, Cuba 1.3 million people are deprived of drinkable water. In India also in the vast stretches of Thar, water is the most precious commodity. In the desert of Rajasthan, one will not perhaps mourn for a spilled pot of ghee but each drop of water is too dear.
In these areas people walk (due to lack of transportation) around 3.5 miles just to fetch some drinkable water from the nearby sources. This work is mainly done by the housewives, who after completing their household chores have to travel on average 3.5 miles to fetch water so that they can quench their thirst.
They usually bring water in the earthen pots, carrying them on their heads. Carrying a heavy load on the head affects the physical health of the bearer. Many women often suffer from backache or spinal disorders due to fetching water from long distances. Water, if spilled on way to home due to imbalance, further adds to their woes. Many a times one fourth of their pots get empty while travelling thus giving them more tension as to what they will drink whole day. This problem usually persisted in these areas. So in order to relieve them from these problems an innovative method of carrying water was founded out.
H20 bags, yes these are like normal bags in which we can fill water close the cap and carry them on our back unlike on the head thus relieving them a bit from the problem. This is 7 times lighter and 7 times smaller than a 20L capacity plastic can. It is made up of some synthetic material and is durable and cheap too.
In a one-of-its-kind initiative, Balmer Lawrie Company has come forward to lighten the load of rural women living in the “water scarce zones” of Barmer district. The company recently distributed 5,000 water backpacks to the women that will make their task of bringing water home much easier. It’s a good initiative which will surely help the people if not relieve them fully.
