APPLE Thinks of SAPPHIRE Screen
Apple,
Apple and Apple. Hello I am not talking about the fruit but the Apple IPhone.
Every time Apple launches its new products it trends on twitter, becomes a
hot topic of discussion among the youth and what not. As one of the million iPhone users there are increased expectations from every upcoming apple products.
As last week hurrying for daily
schedule I accidently dropped my iPhone. The screen was broken. Thankfully, I
got it replaced but at a very high price of $150. That’s where I wished I had a sapphire screen on my iPhone and guess what apple was
in news for considering sapphire screens in the new apple IPhone 6. That’s why
I love Apple.
Well you might be like what this
sapphire is by the way?
Sapphire Screen.
Sapphire is hard, transparent
material made by crystallizing aluminium oxide at very high temperatures. As the
material is heated, it forms disks that can be sliced using diamond-coated
saws. These round disks are then polished to become glass. Such screens are
quite strong and scratch resistant.
Apple has used such sapphire screen in
its latest smart watch, camera cover, in some parts of iPhone 5S like Touch ID
fingerprint scanner. The main screen is the only place left where sapphire is not used.
Then what stopped Apple?
As apple has already used sapphire in
touch ID and camera cover it was customary to use sapphire screen in iPhone 6
and iPhone 6 plus. But recently it dropped the idea of using sapphire inspite
of many benefits.
Mass production of sapphire is
complex. Increasing demand for iPhone in millions would make it difficult for
apple to meet the demand. Also producing sapphire screen on such large scale is
costly.
The other problem with sapphire
screen is that sapphire is denser than gorilla glass which will increase the
weight of the smartphone. Sample phones with sapphire screen
were dropped from different heights and it failed to pass the test.
Hence Apple decided to continue with
its ion-strengthened gorilla glass which is thinner than a sheet and
strengthened with a process that makes it more damage resistant.
But still interested in Sapphire then
the only smartphone with full sapphire screen currently available is Vertu
signature touch, costing £6,750 in UK and $11,300 in US.
So still you have to be careful with
your iPhone screens or else you will lose all you pocket money in replacing it.
Hope sapphire was used in my iPhone; my pocket money would have been saved.
