GM mosquitoes
We human always thought that why God
has created mosquitoes on this earth when they don't contribute, anything to
this earth and are only a headache to human race.
These mosquitoes are a good carrier
of the viruses and act as booster in spreading various diseases like malaria,
chickengunia, Japanese encephalitis and many more.
Human race has always been involved
in various researches to eliminate them from the face of this earth. Malaria
had created a mess in many of the Western, Africa and South Asian
countries leading to large no. of human deaths. As a result first humans tried
to make a vaccine of malaria , but they failed to find one. So at last they decided
to eliminate the mosquito itself.
So many scientist came together to
create the GENETICALLY MODIFIED MOSQUITOES whose most of the offspring's will
be males only.
Before we move further one should know that
its the female mosquitoes that is generally attracted to the humans and not the
male one, hence its the female mosquitoes that are mainly responsible for
malaria, chickengunia etc. It is so because females require protein in order to
lay eggs so she takes protein from human blood and in this process it transmits
virus taken from an infected person.
So scientist in order to eliminate
female mosquitoes, inserted a gene in the male ones, which attaches with the X
chromosome in the male sperm and transmits that only while matting. So when
they mate it results in their offspring being male only. This gene is also
transmitted from one generation to another.
So according to scientists, in four
generations it will eliminate female mosquitoes slowly. While in the mean time
due to decreasing female ones various diseases will also reduce. Thus over time
it will eliminate mosquitoes from this earth.
But one should not forget that all
living things on this earth have one or the other linkages and hence
elimination of the whole specie might lead to some adverse consequences even.
So one can just wait and watch what will be its effect.
